The village of Thornhill is about 50 kilometers from Port Elizabeth along the coast in the direction rfo of Jeffrey's Bay. Here Jean van Niekerk 10 years ago farmers including goats. He has for years been a passion for farming goats, and against the advice of many of the established farmers decided to try anyway. The forest in this world is extremely rugged rfo and is growing rapidly. rfo The general farming in the area is mainly beef cattle grass component used in the field. One of the neighbors had a confused herd of 80 indigenous goats (as in the photo above) kept what he wanted to sell. Although he was not impressed with the goats, Jean, in 2002 purchased, with 10 refined goat ewes and two rams from the Adelaide environment. The plan was for the indigenous goats gradually improved with good rams. Within the first 6 months, one ram and five ewes, however, died. The other goats refined gradually become leaner and extremely deteriorated, while the indigenous goats no problems at all. Despite rfo special effort with the refined goats have done them all, together with the single lambs arrived, died within two years. The idea of the indigenous goats to "improve" had to be reconsidered in favor of keeping hardiness. The challenge would be to maintain resilience and improve conformation.
A turning point in the farming reached when a ram with good conformation rfo (probably rfo a combination of goat and goat indigenous) at one of the old farm workers for many years a small herd of goats in the area continued, was purchased. Despite rfo the fact that the ram was covered with ticks, he was not limping and had no signs of discomfort shown. This ram was more resilient than all previous rams used. He was about 2 years old and until then no medication of any kind at all. Natural selection over many years to ensure that the ram adapted to the difficult conditions prevailing in the area experienced. At this point, the whole herd of goats every 18 days for blocked heart prevents water. If not strict at 18 days interval is not held, the cases of heartwater invariably occurred. rfo Losses due to heartwater the survival of threatened farming (about 20% of the goats and their offspring for one reason or another during the first 5 years died).
The seed of the new ram was visibly more vibrant and better adjusted.
